Let me start off by saying that this is an opinion not supported by any specific facts. Just my observations.
When I was growing up, we expected that we would work for a company and retire with a pension. This was a time when our economy was heavily manufacturing dependent. The city I grew up in had two steel companies and you either worked there or at one of the appliance or equipment manufacturers if you wanted to make good money. People made very decent wages, had great benefits and expected a pension when they retired.
For the most part, those companies are long gone. All of the benefits went with them. Now, the jobs are typically in retail and you are lucky if you make much more than minimum wage. We no longer expect to retire at 65, if ever.
One of the things that I believe Canada does well is knowledge and training. We have some of the best schools in the world and export a lot of knowledge. Think Canadarm etc. Even sports, many originated here! Why aren’t we leveraging that?
We spend so much time trying to lock our borders down that we don’t think about the fact that the road runs two ways. We could be training the people from other countries who will go back and manufacture the goods we no longer produce.
Have you ever read “Who Moved My Cheese”? I can smell the cheese out there. It’s up to us to decide if we are going to continue to sit here waiting for the cheese to come to us. Or, are we going to set out in search of a new source of cheese?
I certainly don’t claim to have the answers but I have to admit I’m getting tired of listening to those who wine about not having any cheese and won’t consider alternative ways of thinking.
I think we are smarter than that. Will we open our minds to the possibilities?
Life is what you make it.
Make it a great day!
Barry
P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for opportunity. I’m thankful for the ability to change my mind. I’m thankful for all that God has given us.
What are you thankful for today?
