It wasn’t me!!! The Bible says so! (Ephesians 5:21-32)
What a way to stir up a room!
The pastor started this Sunday’s service with this as a discussion point. To his credit, he apologized in advance. And then made his point.
The reality is that I believe couples today should “submit” to each other. If you take the phrase in a literal context, you can expect a lot of push back on this one. But, if you pay attention to the passage’s intent, you will understand that this is really the foundation of a great marriage.
Submit might not be the best choice of words today but this again just emphasizes the importance of choosing your words carefully. When taken out of context, words can cause a lot of damage.
Most men I know worship (submit to) their wives. Most of us don’t often express that well enough. I’m not so sure that wives worship (submit to) their husbands in the same way.
A couple of generations ago, women felt they needed to be recognized and demanded “equal” rights. It was interesting that my mother and my grand mother both said no way. Why would they want to give up their rights!
We forget that no one is perfect. We keep expecting our partner to be the perfect husband or wife and yet we are not ourselves. Why is that? Do we forget that our spouse is our “other half”? When we show disrespect for our spouse, we actually are showing disrespect for ourselves because we can’t separate the two!
Maybe that’s why so many marriages are failing today. We have a lack of respect for ourselves and demonstrate that every time we tear down our partner.
Call me a wimp if you like but I chose to submit to my wife just as she submits to me.
God bless and have a great day!
Barry
P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for the wonderful weekend I just enjoyed. I’m thankful I woke up this morning next to the most wonderful person in the world! I’m thankful for the loving support of my wife.
What are you thankful for today?
