This is the day that many give thanks.
Thanks for the freedom that this country provides us. Thanks for a bountiful harvest. Thanks for all that God has created.
Today, I give thanks for all of that but I also give thanks for two heroes that God gave me in this life. My son and my Grandmother.
Brett & Amiya in 2009. My son passed away after a two year battle with a nasty cancer. Brett was actually my “stepson”, how I hate that term. He was with me since he was two years old.
The reason I say he is one of my heroes is that he accomplished more in his 23 years on this earth than many could ever hope to. He had direction and knew exactly where he was headed. He had a beautiful daughter who brings light into our lives every time we see her.
While he was fighting cancer, he never lost focus of his daughter in his life. He taught and praised her whenever he could and scolded when he needed to. I’m sure that when every moment is so precious, that part must have been so difficult. This man fought an incredible battle and almost never complained.
Rather than griping about his situation, he was more likely to apologize to his mother for asking for help when he needed it. Two weeks before he died, he was out in the garden with his daughter collecting bugs because that’s what Dads do with their daughters. Great Dads give their time when the kids need it, not just when they want to. He was a better man than me.
Dear God, thank you for bringing Brett into my life.
Ninety-one years ago today, an amazing woman was born. My grandmother. I thank God she is here to celebrate with us today. During the Second World War, she was working in the meat department at A&P while looking after my father and her husband was a navigator with the Air Force. She did a lot to help improve the rights of the women of her era and was a Vice President with her union.
My Grandmother always had time for me and never shared anything but positive support for whatever I did or needed. When I met Denise, my Grandmother immediately accepted Brett and Dana as her grandchildren. She understood how important they were in my life and never questioned my decision to share my life with them.
There are many reasons to be thankful for this life that God has given us and I thank Him for them all. But, today, I especially thank God for Brett & Grandma.
Make it a great day!
Barry
P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful God blessed me with such wonderful heroes in my life. I’m thankful for Denise who I lean on for support every day (She’s one of my heroes too!). I’m thankful for every day that God gives me to make sure that my grand daughter never forgets how much her father loves her.
What are you thankful for today?
