Lest we forget
Both of my grandfathers served in the Second World War. One was a navigator in the Air Force and the other was a Sergeant Major in the RHLI.
It was interesting, my grandfather in the air force would talk about his experience and the one in the army wouldn’t. I believe it was because the grandfather in the air was fairly detached. I asked my other grandfather one day why he didn’t talk much about it and he told me it’s because he was training boys to die. He just didn’t see that as something he wanted to focus on after the job was done.
It’s time now that we focus on the new vets. It’s a shame that the Viet Nam vets were treated so poorly, let’s not make the same mistake now. We have a new generation of vets that deserve the same level of respect that my grandfathers did.
Whether you agree with war or not is irrelevant. The fact is that these brave soldiers risk their lives for us every day in many ways and deserve our respect for their dedication to protecting our country in times of peace as well as times of war.
Lest we forget,
Barry
P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful I was lucky enough to know my grandfathers. I’m thankful for the freedom we enjoy as Canadians. I’m thankful for each day that I live to enjoy that peace
What are you thankful for today?
