Did you know that sitting can kill you?
A little over a year ago, I had a diabetic incident. This happened just a couple of weeks after my mother passed away. I decided then that I needed to make changes so that I didn’t end up seeing my mother sooner than I needed to. Don’t get me wrong, I miss my mother and love her very much but I want to be an old grandpa.
What I hadn’t realized was that when I changed careers a number of years ago, my job had started to kill me slowly. The reason it was killing me was that I no longer had to get up off my backside. I had gone from walking 20 – 30km per day and lifting repetitively all day to sitting and pushing a pencil. Because I didn’t substitute any activity, I started to gain weight and become sedentary.
After the diabetic incident, I decided to walk a half hour every day and changed my eating habits. As a result, I lost 30 pounds and my sugar problem has levelled off enough that I don’t need any medication. Now I have a lot more energy and feel much better. I hadn’t realized how poorly I was actually feeling.
Today, I happened to come across an article discussing how sitting can kill you. There was a study in 1981 asking people how much of their day they spent sitting and now, 30 years later, they have determined that there is a correlation between how much you sit and your health. Particularly relating to the development of heart disease. I highly recommend reading that article.
So, get up off your backside and live your life like every day is the last one. Otherwise, it just might be.
Make it a great day!
Barry
P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful the little gremlins and goblins stayed safe last night, particularly my little princess vampire! I’m thankful her mother thought enough to bring her for us to see last night. I’m thankful for every day that God gives me in this life.
What are you thankful for today?
