When I used to work in the financial services industry, I often asked my clients “What does retirement mean to you?”
My parents grew up believing that you went to work for a good company with benefits and a pension. When you turned 65, you stopped working and enjoyed the rest of your life. In those days you were lucky if you lived another ten years after you retired. Especially the men.
Today, the average person will change careers at least six times throughout their working life. There is no loyalty from the employer any more. We have created a bottom line society.
I believe that you need to get involved in something outside of work so that you have something to occupy your time when you retire. Be a part of something larger than your self. Join a service organization or a charity. You will develop a larger circle of friends and have a reason to get out of bed after you retire. I believe people who do this live much longer. How often do you hear of an active person who leaves a service organization when they are 75 and they are gone shortly after? We all need a reason to “be”!
Define your WHY and put it to work. It could well save your life!
Have a great day!
Barry
P.S.
What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful God gave us strength to get through the last couple of years. I’m thankful for the mountains in Jasper that have my son mesmerized! I’m thankful to be alive.
