A friend of mine will finally become a Canadian today. Talking to her yesterday was like talking to a bride to be the night before she was getting married!
I have talked with her a few times as she prepared for this day and found it very interesting that, like most new Canadians, she knew more about our country and its history and processes than I did. I have always felt that I was very aware of what it is to be Canadian and yet, she puts me to shame. Most of us “natural” Canadians spend more time complaining about what we perceive to be wrong with our great country. This woman comes to this country knowing full well the opportunities that are available to her. Maybe it should be a part of our educational curriculum to spend time in another country before we start university or college so that we truly understand how good we have it here. Then maybe we will be able to focus on the opportunities instead of deficiencies. Our new Canadians bring optimism and fresh ideas to the table. We should open our minds and consider that maybe we can actually continue to grow. This isn’t to say that we should give up our standards, it’s to say that we can expand on what we have and make it even greater. Congratulations to my “New Canadian” friend and God keep our land glorious and free! Make it a great day, Barry What are you thankful for today? |
A Proud Canadian!
