When we see someone who pays a lot of attention to parents, children and extended family, we often think it’s amazing how wonderful these people are and that they demonstrate selfless altruism.

Are they really?

I don’t know about you but I hope that when I get older, my kids will still include me in their lives. Isn’t that actually selfish? The best way to help ensure that the kids will visit me in my old age is to demonstrate the importance to them.

Visiting my elders doesn’t happen nearly as often as I like but I do try to make sure that happens as often as I can. There’s no altruism there, it’s actually very selfish. Not that I apologize for that. I love my family and want as much time with them as I can.

All I can hope is that I set an example that they value and buy into for themselves. That way, I won’t be sitting by myself when I lose my marbles!

Be selfish, visit your parents. Then maybe your kids will visit you when your time comes.

Make it a great day!

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for the little bit of time I got to spend with my Aunt, Grandmother and Father yesterday. I’m thankful for the time with my daughter yesterday. I’m thankful I got home safe last night.

What are you thankful for today?
