I was at an amazing coaching session today that was provided by someone other than the leaders in our own business. I overheard someone telling others that you can get all the training you need with our company, you don’t need to use the services of the group who had just put on an amazing three day intensive training.
I can tell you from my own experience that you need to expose yourself to other ideas. Your company should have a business system in place and you need to practice that system when selling your product or service but there are often many processes that need to be personalized in order make it work for you. In sales, you need to be yourself and define your own style. You can’t do that if you have only ever seen one way to do things. I used to teach my staff that “this is the way I do this but if you are more comfortable a slightly different way, I don’t care, as long as the end result is the same”.
I’m not saying you should spend all of your time in training; at some point the rubber has to hit the road! What I am saying is that while you are working your business, keep an open mind to new ideas. Learn from people who may be outside of your industry or maybe they are in the same business and something you see them doing can be applied to yours.
Truly intelligent people are not the ones with all of the original ideas. Intelligent people know when to adopt other peoples ideas and put them to work in a way that makes them comfortable.
Decide for yourself! Don’t let someone else tell you what programs to take or how you should say something. Listen to their suggestions with an open mind, ask questions for clarification, and then YOU DECIDE!
Often times, you will hear an idea and it makes no sense to you. The next day, someone else will say the same thing in a different way and all of a sudden it’s brilliant! You will hear the right thing at the right time for you. Just listen.
Whatever your business is and whatever programs you take, decide what works for you and adopt it. Put it to work, don’t just think about it.
Above all else, you decide. You won’t do anything if it’s someone else’s plan. Own it, don’t just buy it!

P.S.
What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful my wife invited me to attend this training session. I’m thankful I met a large group of like minded people who will be supportive without judging. I’m thankful I have a nice warm bed to crawl into.
What are you thankful for today?
